Stem cell research pioneer joins UMB

After 30 years working at Johns Hopkins, stem cell research pioneer Dr. Curt I. Civin has been named to lead the new Center for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

As part of his transfer, he brings with him 15 of his postdoctoral fellows and $21.5 million in research funding. Civin will also accept a teaching post in the UM Department of Pediatrics and serve as an associate dean of the medical school.

Drinking alcohol is like taking Omega-3 fatty acid supplements... it protects the heart!

Recently, the European Collaborative Group of the IMMIDIET Project, a consortium looking at dietary habits and its effects on cardiovascular health, published an article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on "Alcohol consumption and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in healthy men and women from 3 European populations."

I was driving around Ellicott City about a month ago when I noticed on the back of someone's vehicle a car magnet that looked similar to those once "trendy" now hackneyed ribbons supporting causes from breast cancer awareness to "Birth Parents Awareness" (really now?)
